NEXTSTEP: Unlocked Potential was founded to address a persistent gap in services for survivors of domestic violence: the lack of practical, non‑clinical support during the critical transition period after immediate crisis response.
The organization’s founder and Chief Executive Officer is a 17‑year military veteran with a Doctorate in Criminal Justice and lived experience as a survivor of domestic violence. His professional background is grounded in systems analysis, public safety, and organizational leadership. His lived experience informs empathy and design, but does not replace licensed or clinical expertise.
Through both academic research and personal experience, the founder observed that survivors often face barriers that fall outside the scope of traditional services. While shelters, counselors, and legal advocates play essential roles, survivors frequently struggle with immediate logistical needs such as transportation, basic necessities, technology access, and navigating complex systems. These gaps can undermine safety, stability, and long‑term independence.
NEXTSTEP was intentionally designed to complement, not duplicate, existing domestic violence services. The organization does not provide counseling, therapy, legal advice, advocacy, or crisis intervention. Instead, NEXTSTEP focuses on short‑term material assistance, resource navigation, and survivor‑directed support that reduces practical barriers and supports continuity in housing, employment, education, and family stability.
NEXTSTEP relies on collaboration with licensed providers and community partners to ensure survivors are connected to appropriate professional services when needed.
NEXTSTEP’s mission is rooted in dignity, choice, and transparency. Survivors are not required to disclose personal experiences, participate in specific services, or engage beyond what feels safe and appropriate for them. By centering survivor autonomy and ethical practice, NEXTSTEP aims to strengthen the broader support ecosystem rather than position itself as a replacement for specialized care.
NEXTSTEP exists to take survivors’ next step seriously, by addressing practical needs with integrity, accountability, and respect for professional boundaries.
